YEAR 2021

Located on a remote site in Eastern Oregon that offers both expansive views and exposure to extremes of climate, this small one-bedroom house aims to maximize livability and connection to the landscape while operating without support of a municipal utility gird.

The house was designed to passive-house standards and uses mass-plywood, an innovative, Oregon developed wood product, as the primary structural system. This enabled a significant amount of construction to be completed off-site, thus minimizing disturbance to the existing landscape and reducing construction costs.

The design integrates sustainable strategies into the building form and architectural articulation, including a roof sloped both east and west to maximize efficiency of its photovoltaic panels and motorized venetian blinds, which adapt automatically to changes in solar exposure.
